Excellent news for St Cuthbert’s Mews!  THE massive housing renewal programme in the West Lane East area moved a step closer to reality this month with the completion of the first phase of more than 130 new homes.

Four new bungalows and three houses for rent have been built on the site of the former Speedway Pub, completing the first phase of 68 new homes for sale and rent.

West Middlesbrough Neighbourhood Trust (WMNT) is transforming the area  - re-named St Cuthbert’s Mews - in partnership with Hartlepool-based housebuilders, Yuill Homes.

Regeneration bosses at WMNT are delighted with progress on the multi-million pound development of 138 high quality two, three and four bedroomed properties - including 25 houses and bungalows for rent through Endeavour Housing Association and six shared ownership homes.

Reverend Derek Watson, WMNT Board Member and Vicar at the nearby St Martin’s and St Cuthbert’s Church, said: "This impressive development is breathing new life into the West Lane neighbourhood.  Last year we saw people moving into the first homes for sale and the site now features a mixed development of properties for rent, offering a greater choice of housing to local people and welcoming new people into the area.”

All the houses have their own gardens and are arranged around small cul-de-sacs to encourage safe play and improve security. The homes have off-street parking and some have their own garages.

An area of green space with extra lighting will be created to improve the access and security of the footbridge over the A66.  Work to demolish the remaining older houses in Outhwaite Street, Keay Street and West Lane will be complete by the end of March, creating a cleared site ready for the next phase of house building to begin in the summer.

Alex Ross, Partnership Manager for Yuill Homes said: "We’ve been delighted by the interest and sales success of the first phase of St Cuthbert’s Mews and look forward to the continuing popularity of phase two.”
