A lot of work went on this year to improve housing in West Middlesbrough. We’re now seeing good progress on the redevelopment of Central Whinney Banks, the older housing project in the West Lane area and improvements to homes in the Bell Street area.
Key achievements 2004 - 2005
- A Housing Programme Team was established for West Middlesbrough to bring all WMNT housing activity together and drive forward the planned redevelopments.
Our housing newsletter - Regener8 - keeps residents up to date.
- Bellway Homes North East was appointed as the preferred developer for the regeneration of Central Whinney Banks giving the area a £42 million boost. In partnership with WMNT, Middlesbrough Council and Tees Valley Housing Group, Bellway is building 450 new homes, some to rent through Tees Valley Housing Association, and the rest to buy. The transformation has been made possible through Middlesbrough Council transferring the land to WMNT.
- A detailed study of older housing in the West Lane area has resulted in comprehensive plans to redevelop the land to the east of West Lane to create 138 new homes. Local residents have been involved in shaping the proposals through ongoing consultation.
- Dramatic improvements were made to 77 houses in the Bell Street area - together with environmental improvements including improved street lighting, extra parking and revamped green spaces - part-funded by Middlesbrough Council.
