Improving the health of residents in West Middlesbrough is a key aim of WMNT. In partnership with Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust (PCT) and other agencies a range of services and activities are on offer to help residents improve their health and wellbeing.
WMNT’s key objective set to improve health and wellbeing is:
- to provide health and care services that are more accessible and more relevant to people's needs and which promote incentives for good health
The Health, Opportunities and Work Team is driving forward health improvements in West Middlesbrough. Community health initiatives including a walking group and swimming classes are helping to get people active, both socially and physically; school nurse drop-ins are on offer and parents are getting involved in promoting healthy lifestyles in primary schools.
In addition, grants are on offer to improve people’s health by making their homes warmer and drier; hundreds of residents are claiming their full entitlement to benefits thanks to a free advice and support service and counselling and treatment services are helping people affected by drug misuse.
The lack of primary care facilities in the neighbourhood is still a key challenge for WMNT and we’re working in partnership with Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust to provide a new GP practice and treatment facilities as part of the redevelopment of Central Whinney Banks. At the same time, support and learning opportunities are being developed for adults with mental health needs in West Middlesbrough and more targeted support is being given to older people to reduce the need for hospital treatment and improve their general health.
What the Residents’ Panel said: Exactly half of panel members think WMNT has helped to make people healthier
