West Middlesbrough Health Team

Theme: Improving Health & Care

Project Description:

The West Middlesbrough Health Team is a flagship project for West Middlesbrough and brings together a number of initiatives to help improve the health and well being of West Middlesbrough residents. Current projects within the programme include:

·         A range of activities are on offer from the Community Service Volunteers’ Retired Senior Volunteer Programme to encourage residents aged 50+ to take an active part in their community, both socially and through physical activities.  Groups currently operating include the Walkers and Strollers which helps to get people out and about; Trinity Friendship and over 50s swimming. The Health Through Activity Group gives the over 50s the chance to take part in gentle exercise such as table tennis, line dancing and carpet bowls.

·         The Health Promotion Service’s Community Health Development Worker and Community Health Promoter work in partnership with other agencies to develop and support a range of activities and initiatives for West Middlesbrough residents, including weight management classes, luncheon clubs, a Multicultural Group, smoking cessation courses and swimming classes.  They aim to improve the health and well being of local residents.

·         A Public Health Nursing Team offers a range of services including school nurse drop-ins for pupils and parents, and training and fitness sessions for Acklam Grange pupils.  Community Parent Advisors are involved in activities and initiatives in local primary schools to promote healthy lifestyles.

·         The Speech and Language Therapy Service provides advice and support to parents and professionals to enable them to help children improve their communication through language and speech.

·         A Clinical Psychology service provides additional psychological services to the Public Health Locality Team that covers West Middlesbrough. Specialist-led case discussions, individual consultations and teaching and training sessions are available.
