The regeneration of the West Lane area is a key element of this project. The West Lane area has been isolated from the rest of the town for many years by the construction of the A66 highway. Much of the housing is good quality and popular but the older, pre-First World War terraced housing was failing to meet modern fitness standards resulting in an early decision to demolish the worst. This was cleared at the end of 2004.
An independent study was commissioned during 2004 to look at options for the future of the West Lane area in parallel with a broader study looking at the future of all of the terraced housing across Middlesbrough. Following an in-depth consultation process with local residents over a six month period, WMNT agreed in December 2004 to clear the remaining 100 terraced houses so that a comprehensive new residential development could take place in the area.
Yuill Homes have now been appointed as the preferred developer for the area, in partnership with Endeavour Housing Association and WMNT.
