Redevelopment of the Bell Street area

Theme: Improving Housing

Project Description:

Older houses in the Bell Street area were the first in West Middlesbrough to benefit from a facelift, thanks to a major cash injection from WMNT.

The Bell Street neighbourhood – which includes many older private houses in Ayresome Green Lane, Ayresome Grange Road and Bell Street – was the first neighbourhood in West Middlesbrough to be earmarked for a programme of environmental improvements by WMNT.

This project has carried out external refurbishment works to a small estate of 80 houses, along with environmental improvements in the area.

Work includes new boundary walls with wrought iron railings and gates, canopies above doors and ground floor windows, new rainwater gutters and downpipes, repointing of brickwork and repainting, as well as new security measures.

The environment is also being improved, with overgrown areas being pruned, new security measures taken to make rear garage areas safer, new street lighting installed and better use being made of the small areas of green space at the ends of the streets.

When Project Starts and Ends: November 2004 through to June 2005

Key Partners: Middlesbrough Council

Total Project Cost: £580,000

WMNT Funding For Project: £450,000
