Regeneration of Central Whinney Banks

Theme: Improving Housing

Project Description:

The regeneration of Central Whinney Banks (CWB) is WMNT’s largest project.  It will see 26 hectares of land comprehensively redeveloped to create 450 new homes, a new park complete with nature reserve and sports pitches together with new health and community facilities to serve West Middlesbrough.

In partnership with Middlesbrough Council, Bellway Homes North East and Tees Valley Housing Group, WMNT is clearing more than 400 inter-war houses to pave the way for the new homes.  Work to build the first of the new homes is now underway and a quarter of the new houses will be for rent with the remainder for private sale.  There will be a variety of new houses available ranging from bungalows and apartments for older people through to two, three and four bedroomed homes for families together with a landmark apartment building at the gateway to the site.

A completely new network of roads and cycleways will transform the area.  A new roundabout on Acklam Road will create a new access which will lead onto a tree-lined main boulevard which, in turn, will connect to a ‘circus’, the focal point of the development.

Half of the area will be landscaped to create a major new public park for West Middlesbrough.  This will include designating a new nature reserve and the creation of two new football pitches.  Careful attention has been given to children and play. Small, safe toddler play areas will be provided throughout the housing area whilst older children will have a dedicated play area as part of the new parkland.

To complete the scheme, WMNT will be building new health and community facilities for the area.  Plans are being developed with Middlesbrough Primary Care Trust to create a major centre providing GP and primary health services, sports and community facilities.
