Investing In Our Neighbourhood
Project Description:
A variety of community events are helping to bring residents closer together, making more people aware of WMNT and its activities and encouraging people to get involved in community life.
Events include:
- WMNT invited you to soak up the atmosphere of other cultures by taking a trip 'around the world' in April 2006, at Newport Neighbourhood Centre. Over 200 of you enjoyed a feast of music, dance and activities celebrating our diverse neighbourhood. Then in August, hundreds flocked to Whinney Banks Youth and Community Centre for a fun day out. Watch this space for details of our next event!
- WMNT fun day – this popular event was a chance for local people to find out about the tremendous amount of activities and projects on offer from WMNT and have a great day out at the same time. Past events have offered something for all the family, from bouncy castles and a roadshow to cake stalls and circus skills.
- West Middlesbrough’s Community Awards are a chance to honour the area’s ‘unsung heroes’. We have now held three successful ceremonies and already a wealth of individuals have been given a West Middlesbrough Community Award. The Awards recognise the people who make things happen, get things done and above all, are the people who care. For details of the winners for 2006, click on ‘Community Awards 2006’ at the bottom of this page.
- Hanging baskets - Seasonal workshops in spring/summer provide the WMNT area with colourful hanging baskets. The popular green scheme involves training over 100 residents within the WMNT area to make their own hanging baskets to add a splash of colour to West Middlesbrough. The training sessions – subsidised by WMNT – are delivered in partnership with Middlesbrough Council’s Streetscene service and Going for Green initiative. Residents are taught how to make up their own basket, including what plants to choose and they’re also given handy tips on aftercare to keep their colourful creations looking their best. Call Donna Smith on (01642) 757891 for details.
- Christmas Wreath Making – 2005 brought a new event to WMNT residents – a chance to make their own Christmas Wreath. Sessions took place at the Victorian Christmas Market in December, with 50 people took part.
- Best Decorated Christmas House – we’ve run this competition twice now and it's designed to brighten up West Middlesbrough during the festive season. Residents were encouraged to ‘switch on’ and join our competition to win a £50 gift voucher.
- Information roadshows – three information roadshow events take place throughout the year – one in each of the neighbourhoods of Newport, West Lane and Whinney Banks. The roadshows give people information about WMNT and are also a chance for people to find out more about us in a relaxed and fun way. Contact for further information: Call the Trust on (01642) 230555
