Project Description:
The West Middlesbrough Education Zone originally provided support to the four primary schools and nominated secondary schools within the West Middlesbrough area. A recent change in focus means we now reach a larger proportion of pupils by including all schools with ten or more WMNT pupils on their roll, regardless of where the school is located.
West Middlesbrough Education Zone was developed to give support to pupils to ensure they get the qualifications they need to find work. Activities within the zone include:
- Breakfast Clubs helping pupils get the best start to the day
- Extra ICT equipment installed, including PCs, laptops, whiteboards, overhead projectors and digital cameras and videos
- QUEST – personal development and leadership programme
- 15 Teaching Assistants appointed to support children's learning
- Book Bags helping parents and their children to learn together
- The Oracy Project supporting children’s speaking and listening skills
- Song Writing Project culminating in an extravaganza of dance, song and drama performed at our local Middlesbrough Theatre
- Creation of WMNT Education Zone website, as a celebration of the achievements of schools within the zone, and as a teaching resource
- A wide range of after-school clubs provided to help increase pupil motivation and enthusiasm
- Mentors working with identified pupils and their families
- Training for staff on behaviour management
- Installation of a comprehensive system for tracking individual pupil progress
- Subsidised visits to enrich the curriculum and motivate pupils
- Summer playschemes to meaningfully occupy young people during holiday times
- CALM – Career and Life Management courses
- Baby-sitting course involving practical experience of ’real-care’ babies
- Extended induction programme to ease the transition from primary to secondary education
- Participation in Middlesbrough Football Club’s study support programmes
- Digital video club
- Additional school nurse provision
- Ten-week paid work experience programme
- Engagement with Middlesbrough Football Club’s Enterprise Academy offering the ‘Core Programme’
- Study support programmes to help improve pupils’ basic literacy and numeracy
- Homework Clubs to help children fulfil their commitments in a supportive environment
- A wide range of projects to help develop pupils’ confidence and self esteem
