In recent years, crime and anti-social behaviour has continued to fall in West Middlesbrough. There’s been a huge amount of activity and progress throughout 2004/2005 with the introduction of SmartWater, the appointment of an Anti-Social Behaviour Officer and fast tracking of projects through Risk Management to ensure a quick response to tackling crime.
Key achievements 2004 - 2005
- SmartWater was launched and offered free to over 3,000 households and over 200 businesses. This hi-tech fluid was used to mark valuables in almost 1,000 homes with a unique forensic code that can only be detected using ultra-violet light.
- An Anti-Social Behaviour Enforcement Officer was appointed to tackle nuisance, harassment and anti-social behaviour. A ‘Crack House’ closure was achieved in the early days of the project.
- £250,000 was invested in the ‘Key Routes’ project in 2004/2005. The initiative aims to create safe walkways and provide targeted security improvements throughout West Middlesbrough to reduce the risk and fear of crime.
- Mobile CCTV cameras are being used to target crime, anti-social behaviour and environmental ‘hotspots’ in West Middlesbrough.
- The Tenant Management Scheme was set up and supported 20 private landlordsand 25 tenants.
- Two Police Community Support Officers were funded to patrol West Middlesbrough.
- A senior community drugs worker supported 52 local residents with information and advice to improve their knowledge of drug issues.
