WMNT is working with local people to ensure everyone has good quality houses and is proud of the area they live in.
Our objectives to improve housing in West Middlesbrough are:
- To make the housing market work for all people and protect vulnerable residents
- To empower residents as stakeholders who have a real say about their homes and communities
A lot of work is going on to improve housing in West Middlesbrough. We’re now seeing the first houses being built in Acklam Green, we’ve got a preferred developer for the older housing project in the West Lane area and improvements to homes in the Bell Street are complete. Residents have been at the heart of decisions about renewing housing in the area. Consultation has helped to firm up proposals but the challenge ahead is to fully implement these proposals.
2005 saw the start on site at Central Whinney Banks on the first phase of new houses including bungalows and apartments for older people. Over the next five years, 450 new homes will be built, some to rent through Tees Valley Housing Association, and the rest to buy through Bellway Homes.
Working with local residents in the West Lane area, WMNT has agreed to redevelop the older housing area to the east of West Lane to create a new mixed development of 138 new homes, in partnership with Yuill Housing.
A notable aspect of both housing schemes is local people’s commitment to stay in the area – with many residents being re-housed in West Middlesbrough.
