Cracking crime
WMNT is working hard to create a safer West Middlesbrough where people can live, raise their families and do businesses free from crime and anti-social behaviour.
Our objectives for community safety are:
- to develop a responsive and co-ordinated approach to community safety in partnership with local residents, businesses and agencies
- to reduce risk and protect property by improving the physical security of West Middlesbrough
- to make sure people can go about their daily lives free from crime and the fear of crime
- to identify and address specific local needs
In recent years, there has been a dramatic fall in crime and anti-social behaviour in West Middlesbrough. Under the direction of WMNT’s Strategic Risk Management Group, projects including the street wardens, community caretakers and an Anti-Social Behaviour Enforcement Officer are providing a rapid response to crime and helping people to feel safer in their own homes and on the streets. At the same time, partnership working and groundbreaking technology is being harnessed to tackle crime ‘hot spots’ in the neighbourhood.
Many challenges remain and security improvements are now being made to key routes to create safe corridors and walkways and to target security improvements throughout West Middlesbrough to reduce the risk and fear of crime. A high-tech property marking fluid - SmartWater - is being offered to residents and businesses in the neighbourhood and support to landlords and tenants is on offer in a bid to tackle anti-social behaviour and environmental problems relating to private sector homes.
What the Residents’ Panel said: 75% of Residents’ Panel members think WMNT has improved community safety
