WMNT has developed a range of projects to help residents find work, training and enterprise opportunities and support businesses to grow and prosper.
WMNT’s enterprise and employment objectives are:
- to engage residents on an integrated and supported route to employment
- to improve opportunities for learning and boost residents' skills and qualifications
- to increase the number of job opportunities by supporting local businesses to grow and develop
West Middlesbrough has experienced a welcome fall in unemployment rates and an increase in the number of working age people finding work.
At the same time, our efforts to make people ‘work ready’ – and then make sure there are high quality job opportunities open to them - have had notable successes.
Facilities at Macmillan Academy Learning Centre are giving residents and businesses fresh opportunities to brush up their skills. We are also addressing skills shortages, specifically the construction industry.
Much still needs to be done to improve residents’ skills and qualifications and new opportunities for learning are being developed to make sure West Middlesbrough has a skilled workforce in the future. Personal development programmes and modern apprenticeships are helping to target youth unemployment.
The number of new businesses staring up in the area has been slow to progress but efforts are now being targeted to support budding entrepreneurs. Community businesses are also being promoted with a dedicated worker and financial help on offer.
What the Residents’ Panel said: Almost 50% of local residents think WMNT has helped to improve job and training opportunities in West Middlesbrough.
